Even though many studies before the pandemic suggested the expected continuous growth of beauty sector's contribution to the National and International economy. This pandemic caused unexpected challenges to Makeup Artists as their services were completely shutdown due to the Restrictions during the Lock down.
The challenge of solely depending on a service (appointments) that were completely shutdown for longer than 18 months had a devastating impact on their income, resulting in reassessing their career and either to switch industry to or create alternative income streams within the sector!
The alternative income streams were available for the Makeup Artists before the pandemic, however, most makeup artists preferred to continue appointments as this considered the easiest and quickest solution in their career. Other services such as tutorials, YouTube channels, reviews and more seemed to require more efforts and preparations.
Well established Makeup Artists are aware of the variety of income streams available and tend to work on developing them over the years however, those who newly joined the sector fell into the trap of focusing only on appointments and consider it as the Main Income.

Those who worked on this prior to the pandemic were able to suffer less than the others during the National Restrictions.
The most important action was to know and act in response to those Restrictions by understanding the eligibility for the Governmental Funding Schemes for businesses in this sector.
The pandemic introduced alternative income solutions and business development strategies that should not be neglected.
It is important to appreciate these changes even after the ease of restrictions and back to normal. In addition to that, it is important to consider an approach to overcome the negative impact and fully recover in the post pandemic period. Last but not least, is to learn the lessons from these challenges in running your own business and be prepared for any similar challenges in the future.
